Desiring Authentic Relationship

There once was a man who found a pearl of great value.  The pearl was more amazing than anything that the man had seen in his lifetime.  That man sold everything he had in order to obtain that pearl.  And he will not now throw it in to the pig sty to be trampled and soiled.

As should be evident from the dearth of posts coming from this author, it is time for me to move on.  But for those who want to continue in or start some authentic relationship, feel free to drop a letter or stop by the house at 73077 613 Ave, Sterling, NE  68443.

Humbly,

Don U.

Non-resistance?

I want to share some passages with you from the Bible.  I think that these passages fairly clearly call true believers who are seeking to do God’s will to a life of non-resistance.  As such, I think these passages fairly clearly call me to leave my position in the United States Air Force Reserves and, quite possibly, my position with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.  If you disagree, please feel free to comment or email me to let me know where I got it wrong:

Matthew 5:38-47

38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[g] 39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

43“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[h] and hate your enemy.’ 44But I tell you: Love your enemies[i] and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

Romans 12:14-21

14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Interestingly, the following chapter, Romans 13, discusses submission to civil authorities (the ruler “does not bear the sword for nothing”).  So some could say my violent jobs are as the ruler’s right hand, as his sword.  But I don’t find any Biblical justification for such participation as a follower of The Way.

I know some will feel like I am stepping on toes, but I am stepping on noone’s toes more than my own.  And it hurts.

Home Church

This morning we will be getting ready for our home-based fellowship to meet in our house.  Right now, our fellowship has grown to three families, and we really enjoy it.  Most weeks, someone has prepared something to share, but many weeks we spend alot of time fellowshipping and some time singing.  I love it!

Of course, in just our three families, there are 18 attendees, so the living room gets quite full quite quickly.

In other news, I have joined facebook, and I’m not sure why.

Also, on September 20, I got an email that said,

On or about October 5th, Biden will excuse himself from the ticket, citing health problems, and he will be replaced by Hillary.  This is timed to occur after the VP debate on 10/2.

I had dismissed this as clearly a ludicrous proposition.  How could republicans know what the democratic strategy was?  And now that the secret is out, presumably the democrats wouldn’t go through with it.  but then, this morning I see the following news story:

With a sick relative and a son headed off to war, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden has grounded his campaign for a few days.

Not a bad prediction.  I am just beside myself.  I can’t believe this might be happening.

I can’t believe it has been more than 2 months

I should be fired from this blog.  Whoever it is that pays me to do this either isn’t paying me enough or needs to pay more attention to supervising his employees.

In the meantime, I missed posting about my parents’ visit from Ukraine, our first annual farm picnic, a bunch of chicken-processing weekends, and our first anniversary on the farm (September 16).

It looks like I will be working at Offutt AFB for another few months, until January 9, which means that I will continue to lack the time to make meaningful posts for the foreseeable future.  Maybe things will get better as we head into winter.

Processing weekend

Well, we have taken another step down the road to understanding our homesteading deal.  Before the weekend, we had about 115 chickens in the yard, plus our 35 chicken laying flock out in the pasture.  Yesterday and today we processed about 22 chickens (cornish cross).  Both days we stopped by about 9:30, which is a fairly respectable rate, I think.  They dressed out at about 5 pounds each, meaning much meat for all!

I haven’t been posting much lately, largely because I feel like there isn’t enough time for other recreational pursuits, let alone posting to my blog.  We continue to meet with one other family to try to learn more about what it means to function as the church.  The kids have started in on another year of homeschooling, Meagan in 2nd grade & Caleb in 4th.  Meagan just turned 7 and we went to the zoo and bowling to celebrate.  I have been called to active duty at Offutt AFB and am loving spending my days there, although it means very long days at work.  Still, I feel it is less damaging to my soul than working at the prison was.  I am hoping to stretch out my time at Offutt until next Summer, but we will see what the Lord has planned for us.  My parents will be returning from the Ukraine for a visit in August-September and then will return to Ukraine for what I hope is their last year.

The Summer is really wearing on me, and the 12-hour days away from home aren’t helping.  Last weekend, we spent time with family, which was great right up until a brick fell on my head, splitting it (my head) open and requiring 7 staples.  This put me on my back the rest of the weekend, which was relaxing but not very productive.

I have a new book I’m reading, Reimagining Church.  More to follow…
